CHIN TEO was born in 1985 in Muar, Malaysia. He studied industrial design at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and graduated with honours in 2008. A lack of interest in commercial design spurred him to enroll in jewellery making and silversmithing at CAE Melbourne. “Long Dream” is inspired by master of Japanese comic horror, Itou Junji. It is based on the story of a man with an untreatable mysterious disease, which forces his dreams to become longer and more drawn out each night until the distinction between what is real and what is fabricated by the mind becomes lost.

Carol Christian Poell, born in Linz in 1966, lives and works in Milan,
Italy. After having been trained as a men's and a ladies' tailor in
Vienna (Michelbeurn), he studied fashion design at the Domus Academy in
Milan where he also founded the production and distribution company
C.C.P. Srl together with his partner Sergio Simone. After having
presented his first men's collection in 1995, he developed his ladies'
collection from classical elements of traditional menswear three years
later. The distribution network for his articles of clothing and
accessories, which are quite extravagant in terms of production
technology, includes more than 40 dealers all over the world.

As part of a larger project we’ve been working on with The New Order magazine, oki-ni's Creative Director John Skelton caught up with Damir Doma in New York to talk through the label’s development, projects for the coming season and the launch of a new SILENT collection ...

'The reason we did this interview with Damir is for exactly the same reason that we do everything that we do, because we were extremely interested. For a few seasons now I’ve been blown away by his approach, execution and maturity for such a young designer. I also like the fact that he’s so natural and that he doesn’t roll around with a huge ego.

After spending a little bit of time with him on a few different occasions I realised exactly what the draw was for us. It’s because he’s a real person, down to earth and completely open to anything, but at the same time has such a strong sense of his own direction which is exactly how we try to portray ourselves as a brand. Basically, he’s a dude and he’s going to change the world.'

John:

Do you see your upcoming women’s line for Damir Doma mainline as an extension of what you’ve already got going on?

Damir:

For me it’s just one big thing, one big collection.

j:

I thought so, I’m glad you see it like that.

d:

There are certain products that we have for women and we don’t have for men and the other way around obviously but it’s really kind of one big thing.

j:

It’s going to be amazing I’m sure.

d:

I’m also going to do the buying of the materials in one go, it’s the only way that it kind of works with my process. I kind of want to control everything and to do it myself so I couldn’t split it up and do the men’s and then the women’s as a parallel, it wouldn’t work for me.

j:

I find that so exciting. I’ve got a real thing about a ‘unisex everything’. I hate boundaries or lines being drawn around anything, everything should just ‘be’.

d:

Me too. Men sometimes have problems with my collection it’s taken about two years to get to the point where everyone kind of gets used to it because in the beginning it was a bit disturbing for some people.

j:

Yeah, I think that is something that will get easier for people once more people start to break things down like that. I know within our store I get really excited when women come and buy product because our look isn’t a men’s look, it’s just ‘a look’, I love a girl in it as much as I love a boy in it and I’m not bothered who’s coming to take the product.

d:

That’s how I see it myself. When I start the season I don’t have a particular man in mind, it’s just a body.

Boris Bidjan Saberi hails from Barcelona and is the rising star in the recent Paris Collections. The search for perfection and his attention to detail are the driving forces of the creative spirit behind his collections. This has led him to design in a very personal way, filled with almost timeless pieces.

His understanding of materials such as wool, leather, silk bamboo and cotton allow him to create new variations of them by applying manual techniques. Using wax and heat treatment, he alters their appearance while maintaining their essential characteristics. His aim is to give his garments character by stamping them with the imprint of fictitious owners. Certain parallels can be found with architecture.

The clothing is constructed through seams and details that are the foundations of anatomical structures allowing for total freedom of movement.

In what could very well be his last collection, given all the rumors about his exit, Martin Margiela went the retrospective route for his twentieth anniversary collection — it would be a very fitting end, no? All of the models were faceless — a nod to the designer's obsession with anonymity — and the house uniform, a white lab coat, came out in various forms, including during the final bow, when the entire staff emerged on the runway rather than Margiela himself. A hit parade of plastic bags, disco balls, bustier catsuits, Barbie clothes, and AIDS T-shirts led into the final look: a giant silk birthday cake, with two pairs of legs underneath. Was it Margiela's final look ever?

This shoot is not only an opportunity to see Rick in front of the lens, but also a chance for us to preview his first menswear collection before it hits the Paris runways on 23 January. In the true Baudelairean spirit of the dandy as the black prince of elegance, much of Rick's collection is jet-hued, inky, sootied and indeed any other term you can muster for layers of the dark stuff trussed around the form. Working with Panos Yiapanis, who also styles looks for Owen's haute Goth runway collections, Rick is his own best model, angular of face and limb in his equally arresting creations. My particular favourite is the windcheater, snapped above both mid-shot and with Panos astride, made special with a pointed hood and firm panes of fabric protruding from the spine like silken Stegosaurus plates. Part coven, part cretaceous age, this ostensible piece of casualwear is reminiscent of the formalised geometry of 1950s haute couture courtesy of M. Cristóbal Balenciaga. Black as easy-to-wear basic? This is hardly run-of-the-mill menswear.
